  1. 1Why it matters

    Separate household and school responsibilities

Keep school accounts on the district's approved recovery and support process. For household accounts, review available multifactor authentication, unique passwords and recovery contacts together. Do not send student passwords to a teacher in ordinary email. If a device or account is shared by family members, consider how each person can keep their private information separate.

Build an account you can recover

Use different passwords for different accounts and a trusted password manager when permitted by the account provider and your family or school. Turn on available multifactor authentication, preferably using the stronger options the service offers. Keep recovery information current and private. School accounts follow district procedures; do not change district-managed recovery settings without approval.

  2. 2Do this

    • HOUSEHOLDOwn the recovery route

Use contacts you control. Don't use school email as the recovery address for personal accounts.

    • HOUSEHOLDLock it down

Use unique passwords and multifactor protection. Store recovery codes privately.

    • SCHOOLUse the school route

Know your school's support contact for resets, lost devices and unusual activity.

    • SCHOOLAsk before changing

Don't disable managed protections or change recovery settings without school guidance.

    Keep them separate
    • Home files: home
    • School work: school
    • Codes stay private

Locked out or hacked? Use the provider's real recovery page, change the password and recheck recovery info. School account? Ask the school.

  3. 3Quick check

Where should a school-account recovery problem go?
How should you manage a school account's recovery settings?

Choose an answer for each question.
